Clinical supervision is critical for individuals working toward their licensure, but the rules around them can be complicated.
To become a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) or Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in Pennsylvania, for example, you must:
- Reach 3,000 of supervised clinical experience within two years, with at least 500 hours per year and no more than 1,800 per year.
- Remain in a single setting for 30–40 hours per week for at least one three-month period OR remain in a single setting for at least 15 hours per week for at least six months.
- Meet with a clinical supervisor for two hours for every 40 hours of clinical experience.
Of those clinical supervisor hours, at least one of them should be an individual session. One of them may be in a group setting.
So, if you’re working full-time, you should have two one-hour supervision sessions per week.
All of those rules are outlined in Pennsylvania’s Application process to Apply for Initial Licensure As A Professional Counselor.

Why Is Clinical Supervision Required?
Clinical supervision is your opportunity to receive professional guidance and support in your caseload.
During a clinical supervision session, you’ll present the cases you’re working on and explain any issues you’re struggling with.
Your supervisor will then work through those cases with you and assist in developing any specialized techniques you’re working on, including EMDR, Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT), psychotherapy, and others.
Is Individual Supervision or Group Supervision Right For You?
What Is Individual Supervision?
In individual supervision, you’ll work one-on-one with an experienced therapist who will guide you through your latest caseload and help you tackle complex problems. In states like Pennsylvania, you’re required to have at least one hour of individual supervision for every 40 hours of clinical work.
What Is Group Supervision?
In group supervision, you and other supervisees will meet with an experienced therapist to talk through your caseload and discuss challenges you’re facing inside your sessions. In Pennsylvania, one of your two required hours (per 40 hours of clinical work) of supervision may be in a group session.
How to Pick Between Individual or Group Supervision
Individual and group supervision sessions come with their own unique benefits and disadvantages. Here are two questions to consider:
- Do you prefer learning one-on-one or in a group environment? Group supervision gives you an opportunity to work with a cohort, while one-on-one sessions give you more individualized attention.
- What’s your budget? Many new therapists choose group supervision because it’s usually more affordable than individual supervision.
- How much privacy do you want? If you’re uncomfortable working through your professional challenges in a group setting, individual supervision may be best for you.
